El-Adra Church dates back to the 8th century and was
the seat of the Coptic Patriarchy from the 14th to the
18th century. The church contains a number of valuable
icons including one of the Annunciation dating from
1335. The central sanctuary holds 13 icons, with the
Virgin in the center and the 12 apostles on either
side. The southern sanctuary is dedicated to the
Archangel Gabriel and has an iconostasis with 7
ancient icons. Also in the southern sanctuary is a
water well which is believed to have miraculous curing
powers. The church is 5 m below ground level.
